Tuesday 11 October

Jefferson (788): from Notes on the State of Virginia (789-91)

Walker (791): from David Walker’s Appeal (792-95)

Garrison (795): “To the Public” (796-797)

Truth (801): “Speech to the Women’s Rights Convention” (801-802)

Thursday 13 October

Douglass (1170): Narrative of the Life... (1174), Chapters 1-5

Some things to consider:

•what is the role of the prefaces? how do you react to them?

•watch the insider/outsider dynamics: when is Douglass reporting personal experience, when witnessing, when presenting "sociology" or general views?

•make note of particularly effective bits of writing, and think about why they are effective.
